Description: Lost for almost 50 years, this is one of the first full length gangster films, and a film whose rediscovery in the 1970s changed film history.
As a child, Owen Conway is forced into a life of poverty after his mother’s death. He grows up to be a street tough gangster, but slowly falls for a social worker who wants to reform him. However, a tough on crime DA and Owen’s gangster buddies strive to doom his new love.
A hit at the time for then-28-year-old director Raoul Walsh, who had a 50 year career as a director, and producer William Fox, namesake of the Fox Film Corporation, the precursor to 20th Century Fox. Based on Owen Frawley Kildare’s memoir My Mamie Rose, which was adapted into a play entitled ‘The Regeneration’, written by Kildare and Walter C. Hackett.
Shot on location on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the Bowery, and Hell’s Kitchen, with actual local gangsters, prostitutes, and homeless people as supporting actors, extras, and background players. The boat disaster depicted in the film is based on the General Slocum tragedy, which occurred 11 years before the film was made.
This upload is upscaled to 1080p, fixes the image proportions, deinterlaces the image, and runs it at 24 frames per second (even though its actually running 16-18fps).
The film’s rediscovery at the Museum of Modern Art in the 1970s shifted a lot of thinking on the history of American film, and this is now considered one of the most important early feature films, and was incredibly formative for gangster movies.
